Blockchain-based photo forensics with permissible transformations

【Abstract】Thanks to the popularity of smartphones with megapixel cameras, people would like to capture and share their daily life by means of photos, which results billions of photos uploaded onto Internet every day. However, photo-faking is an extremely easy task at present, since digital photo editing tools are more and more popular and powerful. Besides, due to the lack of copyright protection mechanisms, photo owners lose control of their photos after uploading the photos to Internet. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based photo forensics scheme in order to uniformly solve photo-faking problems, photo-tracing problems and copyright dispute problems. We combine blockchain technology with image authentication technologies and propose a new mining protocol to stimulate miners to verify photos for users. The scheme allows users to define their own access control rules and provides on-chain photo proofs with which one can verify the copyright of photos and trace the operating histories of them. We implement the system on Ethereum platform and analyze the security of the system. Compared with other schemes, our scheme has the ability of photo forensics with authentication, copyright protection and traceability. In addition, our system allows a variety of permissible transformations without adding additional storage overhead. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
