【Abstract】The extant literature has mostly examined blockchain in mandatory-use contexts from the buyers' perspective. However, the current literature lacks exploration of its implementation in voluntary contexts, which may contribute to the persistently low rate of blockchain adoption. This study investigates the suppliers' perceived affordances of blockchain in voluntary-use contexts by conducting 22 interviews with supplier firms and relevant stakeholders in the organic food and banking industries. Drawing on affordance and signalling theories, the findings indicate that in emerging supply chain relationships, suppliers use blockchain because of their perceived trust affordances. Blockchain affords suppliers to signal their organisation's credibility and openness in information sharing to potential and new buyers. In established relationships where inter-organisational trust has been well developed, blockchain use by suppliers is driven by their perceived efficiency affordances. This study offers implications in highlighting the key differences of suppliers' perceived affordances of blockchain in emerging and established relationships.
