Toward Metaverse of everything: Opportunities, challenges, and future directions of the next generation of visual/virtual communications

【Abstract】The emergence of Metaverse, a digital environment built on Web 3.0 technologies, has garnered significant attention from various industries and fields, including science and technology. This technology offers the potential to create virtual versions of physical objects, resulting in a digital twin (DT) of the physical world. This paper aims to explore the Metaverse-based Internet of everything (IoE), which we have termed the Metaverse of everything (MoE), as a three-dimensional (3D) virtual communication and relationship platform. The MoE includes Web 3.0 components, generated data, virtual individuals called Metaversians, and all virtual things in Metaverse, forming a comprehensive network of interconnected entities. Our research suggests that Metaverse will become increasingly popular, with the virtual world incorporating more aspects of the physical world. We have conducted a SWOT (Strengths - Weaknesses - Opportunities - Threats) analysis of the MoE concept and have identified several opportunities and challenges. Finally, we propose potential future directions for MoE that academic researchers, industry owners, and IT leaders can pursue. In particular, we suggest the implementation of a new service called Metaverse-as-a-creator (MaaC) based on an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled Metaverse as a significant achievement in future Internet-based communication.
