Responsibly strategizing with the metaverse: Business implications and DEI opportunities and challenges

【Abstract】This viewpoint article aims to lay out the foundations for IS research on the strategic implications as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) opportunities and challenges of the metaverse - a sociotechnical system providing users with an immersive, synchronous 3D experience of (virtual) reality through interoperable platforms and sensor devices. We first examine the metaverse's technologies and its underlying business models, which hold immense strategic implications for organizations and industries, and might require rethinking the future of work. As with most emerging technologies able to generate, collect, and process user data, the metaverse comes at a price; leveraging the metaverse strategically will require ethical and DEI considerations. After examining all these aspects of the metaverse, we reflect on ways IS scholarship engaged in strategizing can advance theoretical and practical knowledge by generating novel research questions and outlining a research agenda. Our contribution is twofold: first, we analyze the metaverse using a sociotechnical lens, thereby setting the ground for future studies of the phenomenon. Second, we identify specific strategic implications as well as DEI opportunities and challenges associated with the metaverse, and discuss how scholarship versed in IS strategizing can contribute to addressing them, both theoretically and empirically.

The merchants of meta: A research agenda to understand the future of retailing in the metaverse

【Abstract】Due to rapid technological developments, the metaverse is quickly garnering attention from all areas of retailing. With a projected market of $800 billion by 2024, the metaverse is expected to radically reshape retailing in the digital world. However, very little is known about the metaverse from a customer, retailer, or brand perspective. This article summarizes how the metaverse has been conceptualized thus far in the literature and the popular press. The authors offer a new conceptualization of the metaverse that contains four distinct dimensions: online collaboration, high consumer immersion, unique digital assets, and digital personas.Considering that the technologies currently used to provide high consumer immersion (e.g., augmented reality, virtual reality) and unique digital assets (e.g., blockchain technology) are not fully developed or commercialized, the authors also propose the concept of a transitory metaverse to understand the current stage of metaverse development better.The authors conclude by providing 27 directions for future research based on a full factorial of how the metaverse dimensions amplify three customer touchpoints in the digital experience (digital economic exchange, complex social relationships, direct environment interaction) for the three main stakeholders of any retailing exchange (consumers, retailers, brands) along the entire customer journey (pre-purchase, purchase, post-purchase).& COPY; 2023 New York University. High on Bitcoin: Evidence of emotional contagion in the YouTube crypto influencer space

【Abstract】Video blogs (vlogs) on content sharing platforms continue to grow in importance in online marketing. We show the strong influence that vloggers exert on their audience in the quickly expanding blockchain, crypto-assets, and Web3 industry. Measuring the correlation of sentiment in the title and transcript of 11,954 videos to that of cumulatively 3.6 million viewer comments, we find significant emotional contagion across all seven selected YouTube Bitcoin vlogs, all of which-in line with the gender imbalance of both Web3 and the YouTube influ-encer sphere-are hosted by men. The effect of emotional contagion is more pronounced for negative than positive emotions, and, although emotional bonds are said to intensify with recurring exposure to an influencer, it does not increase over time. The findings are relevant for marketers in blockchain-based markets, for financial regulators to understand the disruption potential exerted by crypto vloggers, and for crypto vlog viewers.

NFT-Based Intelligence Networking for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles: A Quantum Reinforcement Learning Approach

【Abstract】Recently, the Internet of vehicles (IoV) and connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) have become research hotspots. The accuracy and efficiency of artificial intelligence (AI) models are crucial for CAVs to make decisions automatically. Intelligence networking enables each CAV to train appropriate models locally with the help of other CAVs' intelligence and make up for the lack of experience and computing power of a single-vehicle. However, intelligence is distributed across diverse geo-locations in the intelligence networking paradigm, which calls for accurate, efficient, and lightweight intelligence discovery mechanisms. In this article, we propose a non-fungible token (NFT)-based distributed intelligence networking scheme (NDIN) for CAVs. We use NFT to tokenize intelligence and efficiently describe intelligence from multiple aspects through meta-data, facilitating applications to better understand and search for intelligence in complex and trust-lacking IoV. We present the architecture, modules, and core mechanism of NDIN. Then, we formulate the essential problem as a discrete Markov decision process (MDP) and adopt the quantum-inspired reinforcement learning (QRL) algorithm to find the optimal policy. Also, the convergence rate and performance compared with existing schemes are evaluated. Finally, we discuss several related challenges and opportunities.

Blockchained smart contract pyramid-driven multi-agent autonomous process control for resilient individualised manufacturing towards Industry 5.0

【Abstract】The production control for the mass individualisation paradigm of R&D-stage products is challenging due to the mix-flow and frequently-disturbed environment. With the convergence of the sustainable development goals and the increasing individualised demands in products, resilient manufacturing is envisioned in Industry 5.0 proposition. Concerning that conventional centralised production control methods suffer from low stability and inefficiency of decisions under frequent disruptions, this paper establishes a blockchained smart contract pyramid-driven multi-agent autonomous process control (BSCP-MAAPC) approach for improving the timeliness and adaptability of control towards resilient individualised manufacturing. Firstly, a blockchain-based multi-agent system architecture is designed based on agent encapsulation of manufacturing units. Blockchained smart contracts are used as the enabler of the multi-agent system for peer-to-peer negotiation and coordination of tasks. Secondly, a quad-play blockchained smart contract pyramid together with a series of decentralised control patterns are designed to enable the initial task dispatching of various individualised demands, as well as rapid dynamic adjustment of schedule in response to internal random disruptions. Finally, a blockchained smart contract pyramid-driven multi-agent autonomous process control system prototype is built in the ManuChain system, and experiments are conducted to analyze the proposed BSCP-MAAPC approach in different environments.

Investigating the nature of interaction between crypto-currency and commodity markets

【Abstract】This paper investigates the dynamic relationship and volatility spillovers between cryptocurrency and com-modity markets using different multivariate GARCH models. We take into account the nature of interaction between these markets and their transmission mechanisms when analyzing the conditional cross effects and volatility spillovers. Our results confirm the presence of significant returns and volatility spillovers, and we identify the GO-GARCH (2,2) as the best-fit model for modeling the joint dynamics of various financial assets. Our findings show significant dynamic linkages and volatility spillovers between gold, natural gas, crude oil, Bitcoin, and Ethereum prices. We find that gold can serve as a safe haven in times of economic uncertainty, as it is a good hedge against natural gas and crude oil price fluctuations. We also find evidence of bidirectional causality between crude oil and natural gas prices, suggesting that changes in one commodity's price can affect the other. Furthermore, we observe that Bitcoin and Ethereum are positively correlated with each other, but negatively correlated with gold and crude oil, indicating that these cryptocurrencies may serve as useful diversification tools for investors seeking to reduce their exposure to traditional assets. Our study provides valuable insights for investors and policymakers regarding asset allocation and risk management, and sheds light on the dynamics of financial markets.

【Abstract】Although the transformative impact of the metaverse on tourism and its marketing has been widely discussed, little is known about the metaverse in tourism marketing. In this study, in-depth interviews with 19 representative metaverse tourism stakeholders from multiple categories are conducted. Based on a modified conceptual model of destination competitiveness and stakeholder theory, this study reveals that the factors driving the development of metaverse tourism are planning and management; economic, sociocultural, and technological factors; and recognition and acceptance, whereas the hindrances stem mainly from the government, industry, tourists, local communities, and educational institutions. Accordingly, theoretical and practical contributions are provided.

Metaverse meets digital entrepreneurship: a practitioner-based qualitative synthesis

【Abstract】PurposeConsidering the pervasiveness of technology, this article offers an understanding of how the metaverse can impact digital entrepreneurship. The objective will be to gather professional evidence on how the revival of this new technology can bring entrepreneurial development.Design/methodology/approachThrough a qualitative study approach based on applying the metaverse in digital business contexts and analysing 533 practitioner sources from the Nexis Uni database, it will be possible to identify the concepts and application techniques of this emerging technology. The research adopts a qualitative methodology based on a mixed thematic and content review using tools such as ATLAS.ti and Leximancer.FindingsThis study finds three relevant macro-topics for metaverse and digital entrepreneurship (technology, immersive and design) and eight concepts (private solutions, digital twins, gamification, public solutions, new business worlds, co-design, collaborative spaces and stakeholders' participation). The uncovered elements demonstrate professionals' interest in a new mode of digital entrepreneurship using the metaverse. This interest highlights the commitment of companies and entrepreneurs toward discovering new services delivered in virtual and parallel worlds that find the creation of digital twins as their essence. Therefore, the study explores ongoing relationships for developing increasingly technically complex metaverse platforms and customer service offerings.Research limitations/implicationsThe study has some limitations as the selection of the database and the way the cases are focused on, which may be a stimulus for future studies. The analysis has innumerable theoretical and practical implications. In the first case, this research will shed light on an empirical case concerning the conceptual difference between innovation or greater transformation of business models through the metaverse. This work will directly contribute to the global discussion by identifying a model for applying emerging technology to digital entrepreneurs. Finally, from a practical point of view, the authors will provide new insights to digital entrepreneurs by showing them applications, best practices, and platforms they can use for their businesses.Practical implicationsOn a practical level, the authors show practical opportunities coming from the metaverse for digital entrepreneurs. This study may inspire CEOs, managers, and future entrepreneurs to use the metaverse to expand their businesses by diversifying their services into numerous sectors.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this study represents one of the first efforts to study the metaverse by framing it from theoretical and practical perspectives of digital entrepreneurship. Additionally, future research implications may guide researchers in this brilliant research field.

【Abstract】The Metaverse, a hypothetical virtual space where people interact with digital environments, has gained attention as a transformative concept in various industries like education, healthcare, and business. However, a comprehensive understanding of the Metaverse's research landscape and future prospects is essential to guide further exploration and decision-making in this dynamic field. On the basis of the preliminary analysis and the existing literature, the comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the Metaverse is anticipated to reveal a number of themes that span the vast spectrum of its applications. The objective of the analysis is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state and future prospects of the Metaverse by analyzing past and present research trends and predicting future research directions. The research collected 928 journal articles from the Web of Science database using bibliometric methods. Through co-citation and co-word analysis, the study identifies the most influential publications, outlines the knowledge structure, and forecasts future developments. The study identified four distinct clusters for co-citations analysis and five distinct clusters for co-word analysis. Despite the growing importance of the Metaverse in various aspects of human life, more scholarly efforts are required to provide a comprehensive overview of its research landscape. This article provides illuminating insight into the expanding field of Metaverse research and its applications to human life. The study concludes with a comprehensive explanation of Metaverse research and perspectives on the field's future development. This is the first study to present a knowledge structure of the Metaverse via a science mapping methodology.

The differential influence of social media sentiment on cryptocurrency returns and volatility during COVID-19

【Abstract】This research investigates the effects of several measures of Twitter-based sentiment on cryptocurrencies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Innovative economic, as well as market uncertainty measures based on Tweets, along the lines of Baker et al. (2021), are employed in an attempt to measure how investor sen-timent influences the returns and volatility of major cryptocurrencies, developing on non-linear Granger causality tests. Evidence suggests that Twitter-derived sentiment mainly influences Litecoin, Ethereum, Cardano and Ethereum Classic when considering mean estimates. Moreover, uncertainty measures non-linearly influence each cryptocurrency examined, at all quantiles except for Cardano at lower quantiles, and both Ripple and Stellar at both lower and higher quantiles. Cryptocurrencies with lower values are found to be unaffected by investor sentiment at extreme values, however, prove to be profitable due to more aligned investor behaviour.& COPY; 2022 The Author(s). 【Abstract】Metaverse is a unique space in a virtual world that with many capabilities and features shows us a world in which we can experience life in all its dimensions. The presence of Metaverse in the global arena and the use of the facilities of this technology are effective in improving living conditions in developing cities. In this study, two sample projects that Metaverse can support are presented in India and Ghana. The remarkable thing is its innovative method that can solve many problems in the cities of the world. One of the most important challenges in the world today is saving cities from climate change and its adverse effects. Metaverse is one of the innovative methods to reduce the effects of greenhouse gas emissions in the cities of the world. The question is whether Metaverse can influence the urban planning of many cities in the world and change urban planning in the world internationally? And can Metaverse challenge the theoretical foundations in the city? The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of the Metaverse on the city level. This study aims to introduce a new way to solve the problems of today and the future of world cities by examining Upland and its effects on urban sustainability and ways to prevent climate change. In this context, Metaverse technology has been used as a new solution to provide jobs, reduce poverty, increase public health, prevent climate change and, as a result, realize a better life for future generations. The results of this study, due to being cross-border and creating a global perspective on the Metaverse in urban planning, can create a new scientific perspective based on technological advances in urban studies.

Graph Neural Network-Based Bitcoin Transaction Tracking Model

【Abstract】In recent years, with the rapid development of the digital economy, digital currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum have become increasingly popular among the public. Tracking and regulating digital currency transactions have become a challenging technology for the healthy development of the digital economy. That is because blockchain and peer-to-peer networks are the underlying technologies of digital currencies. Blockchain transaction has some new features, such as stronger anonymity and distributed storage. Therefore, it is difficult for the regulatory system to track the transaction relationships among users. Recent studies have shown that the accuracy, time, and space costs of transaction tracking, as well as the trade-offs between them, still need to be improved. In this article, we propose a new blockchain transaction tracking model called BT2(Bitcoin Transaction Tracking Model). BT2 first combines an improved sampling aggregation algorithm with a graph neural network. And then, it exploits an inductive aggregation method to effectively generate rich node embeddings for a small number of unobserved nodes. Next, the node embedding vectors are used to generate edge information among nodes through message-passing functions. Finally, we can use the edge information to obtain the relations among Bitcoin accounts. This paper evaluates the model on the real-world dataset and explores the impact of various parameters, such as network depth and iteration time, etc. From the experimental results, the model's average AUC (area under the ROC curve) can reach up to 0.93, and the average accuracy is 86%. The numerical results indicate that the performance of BT2 is better than the state of art methods.

EVMTracer: Dynamic Analysis of the Parallelization and Redundancy Potential in the Ethereum Virtual Machine

【Abstract】Ethereum is one of the first blockchains executing smart contracts, i.e., financial applications directly executed on the ledger using a virtual machine. High transaction volumes caused by financial applications, including decentralized finance and non-fungible tokens, slow down the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Hence, there is a need to detail the execution characteristics of the EthereumVirtual Machine before its performance can be improved. This work introduces an off-line Ethereum virtual machine tracer called EVMTracer that produces runtime data dependence graphs from executed transactions as an alternative program representation. From the runtime dependence graphs, we can deduce valuable metrics about program execution characteristics, including the degree of parallelization and computational redundancies in smart contracts. Our experiments encompass all blocks up to 12M on the Ethereum mainnet. We found a geometric mean of 1.90x theoretical maximum speedup when executing the smart contracts in parallel and identified 34.97% of SLOAD instructions as redundant.

Blockchain-Based Decentralized Power Dispatching Model for Power Grids Integrated with Renewable Energy and Flexible Load

【Abstract】To cope with the energy crisis and environmental pollution, the future development of the power system has to change towards a clean, low-carbon, flexible, and diversified direction. This paper proposes a decentralized power dispatching model based on blockchain technology to address the problems of uncertainty, privacy, security, and reliability in power dispatching systems containing renewable energy and flexible loads. Considering the uncertainty of wind, photovoltaic, and flexible load integration into the power grid, the total generation costs of the system are established, and the smart contracts of the decentralized power dispatching are proposed. The proof of work (PoW) consensus mechanism is improved in this paper. The hash operation that must be repeated in the PoW algorithm is replaced by an optimized computation process using a blockchain-based genetic algorithm (BD-GA). The proof of work-load-genetic algorithm-based (PoW-GAD) consensus algorithm is proposed. The decentralized power dispatching model and improved consensus algorithms' effectiveness was confirmed by simulation. The power dispatching method in this paper reduces the system cost and increases wind and photovoltaic usage. The improved PoW-GAD algorithm, while inheriting the security features of the PoW algorithm, adapts to the blockchain-based decentralized dispatching structure and enhances system security.

【Abstract】With the development of blockchain tech-nology, a variety of mutually independent blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, as well as private and consortium chains, coexist in large numbers. As a linker of the blockchain network, blockchain interop-erability will link more blockchain ecosystems, real-ize the interconnection of the blockchain and enhance the scalability of the blockchain. This paper sum-marizes typical blockchain interoperability projects. Firstly, it proposes a blockchain interoperability defi-nition and an architecture model. Secondly, it analyzes technical characteristics of blockchain interoperabil-ity, and typical blockchain interoperability cases are compared. Finally, the trend of future development of blockchain interoperability technology is summarized and discussed.

QoE enhancement of the industrial metaverse based on Mixed Reality application optimization*

【Abstract】As a comprehensive integration of many new-generation information technologies, the metaverse has become a research hotspot that has attracted much attention. As a part of the metaverse, the industrial metaverse is expected to break through the constraints of space and time and promote high-quality industrial development. The industrial metaverse is human-centric, so its quality of experience (QoE) is a key topic. As one of the enabling technologies of the industrial metaverse, Mixed Reality (MR) can seamlessly integrate virtual information with the physical world and is widely regarded as an important window to the industrial metaverse. In close integration with other enabling technologies, industrial MR applications can be seen as a path toward the realization of the industrial metaverse; thus, the optimization of industrial MR applications can effectively achieve the QoE enhancement of the industrial metaverse. Based on the analysis of existing research and the characteristics of industrial scenarios, consistency, authenticity, smoothness, and comfort are identified as the factors that influence the user experience (UX) of industrial MR applications. Specific optimization methods for industrial MR applications are proposed to improve the UX with regard to these four factors. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods, a QoE evaluation model of the industrial metaverse based on the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) is established. Moreover, an industrial metaverse prototype for longwall mining that incorporates the proposed methods is developed and its QoE is evaluated. The results show that the proposed optimization methods for industrial MR applications significantly enhance the QoE in the industrial metaverse, and can provide better services for users in industrial systems, thus better serving these systems.

These experiences can be designed to align with educational frameworks and curricula, providing a structured and engaging learning environment. However, as the metaverse evolves and new features are introduced, it is vital to address potential cybersecurity concerns. The seamless integration of various technologies and the vast amount of user data being generated within the metaverse necessitate robust security measures. Cybersecurity protocols must be implemented to safeguard user identities, protect personal data, and ensure a secure digital environment. Implementing encryption techniques, multi-factor authentication, and advanced access controls can help mitigate security risks within the metaverse. Regular security audits and vulnerability assessments should be conducted to identify and address potential weaknesses. Additionally, continuous monitoring and threat detection systems are essential to detect and respond to any malicious activities or unauthorized access attempts. A Blockchain-Centric IoT Architecture for Effective Smart Contract-Based Management of IoT Data Communications

【Abstract】The exponential growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) is being witnessed nowadays in different sectors. This makes IoT data communications more complex and harder to manage. Addressing such a challenge using a centralized model is an ineffective approach and would result in security and privacy difficulties. Technologies such as blockchain provide a potential solution to enable secure and effective management of IoT data communication in a distributed and trustless manner. In this paper, a novel lightweight blockchain-centric IoT architecture is proposed to address effective IoT data communication management. It is based on an event-driven smart contract that enables manageable and trustless IoT data exchange using a simple publish/subscribe model. To maintain system complexity and overhead at a minimum, the design of the proposed system relies on a single smart contract. All the system operations that enable effective IoT data communication among the different parties of the system are defined in the smart contract. There is no direct blockchain-IoT-device interaction, making the system more useable in wide IoT deployments incorporating IoT devices with limited computing and energy resources. A practical Ethereum-based implementation of the system was developed with the ability to simulate different IoT setups. The evaluation results demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed architecture. Considering varying-scale and varying-density experimental setups, reliable and secure data communications were achieved with little latency and resource consumption.

The exchange theory of web3 governance

【Abstract】Blockchains have enabled innovation in distributed economic institutions, such as money (e.g., cryptocurrencies) and markets (e.g., decentralised exchanges), but also innovations in distributed governance, such as decentralised autonomous organisations. These innovations have generated academic interest in studying web3 governance, but as yet there is no general theory of web3 governance. In this paper, we draw on the contrast between a 'romantic view' of governance (characterised by consensus through community voting) and the 'exchange view' of governance from public choice theory (characterised by an entrepreneurial process of bargaining and exchange of voters under uncertainty). Our analysis is the first to argue that the latter 'exchange view' of governance is best to understand the dynamics of governance innovation in web3, providing the foundations for a new general theory of governance in this frontier field. We apply the 'exchange view' of governance to three case studies (Curve, Lido and Metagov), exploring how these projects enable pseudonymous, composable and permissionless governance processes to reveal value. Our approach helps illuminate how this emergent polycentric governance process can generate robustness in decentralised systems.

【摘要】“区块链+基层监督”体系的构建与运作,体现了基层监督中“程序性权力”,程序性权力是脱离于人而运作的监督机制,具备智能合约、去中心化以及数据存证等多种内在优势,进而推动基层监督的路径创新:一是基层纪检监察组织与村务监督委员会的协同监督;二是村干部权力腐败的自动预警与研判;三是预防村干部腐败的高压场域。根据上述基层监督路径的不同特点,村干部权力的监督方式呈现出新的形态,即常态化监督、目标式监督与跟进式监督。同时,程序性权力运行过程中可能出现某些风险,可以采取建立备案机制、完善技术监管体制、建立数据反馈与处理机制等办法进行规避,由此确保基层监督中程序性权力的有效运作。

【摘要】作为艺术学与经济学跨界融合的产物,想象力消费既是艺术生产、艺术消费,也是经济消费和意识形态的再生产。关于电影想象力消费的研究,既是对生产的研究,也是对消费的研究;既要看到消费对想象力的激发,也要看到消费对想象力的限制。想象力消费是对电影类型变化的研究,也是对电影形态分流的研究。想象是一种生动的有机的创造能力。离开想象力,电影不存在。因此,任何题材和风格的电影,包括历史题材的正剧,都可以而且应该具有想象力。电影的梦幻性,是指电影赋予现实事物某种超现实的梦幻特质。在强调想象力的同时,仍然要坚持电影梦幻性的追求。新媒介、新技术给想象力消费类电影带来更为丰富的表现手段,这却只是一种辅助工具和手段。作为艺术的电影,仍然需要讲述故事、富含情感、表达思想;创作者所具备并体现在电影作品中的人文关怀和人文精神,才是电影的灵魂。

【摘要】传统结构的区块链在保证系统去中心化需求的同时占用了大量存储空间,且吞吐量无法得到提升.为了更加高效、安全地存储海量数据,提出了一种区块链结合数据库的架构,它可以提高系统整体的吞吐量.此外,区块链适用于云存储环境下日志型数据的存储,如视频日志、音频日志、图像日志等日志型数据,但不适合常规内容频繁更新的使用场景,如数据库应用场景.基于此,提出了一种数据可信保障方法,通过验证事务日志是否发生改变推导出数据是否被恶意篡改.采用Hyperledger Fabric结合MySQL的实例,通过实验说明该方法可验证频繁更新的数据库数据是被正常更新还是被异常篡改,并且可恢复数据库的安全.
