【Abstract】Blockchain interoperability conflates the need for distributed systems to communicate with third-party systems without a canonical chain or orchestration layer. As there is no "chain to rule them all" (for performance, privacy, and market forces), these distributed systems rely on exchanging data and value across network boundaries. Interconnected systems achieve a higher value than the sum of their parts, similar to how the Internet emerged as a set of isolated Local Area Networks (LANs)-and, by force of surprising synergies, such networks fundamentally transformed society forever. Concurrently, in the last decade, we have witnessed the astonishing development of blockchain technologies, which seem more connected than ever: via bridges,(14) oracles,(24) and other interoperability mechanisms.(8)(,)(26)(,)(41) These recent developments have, slowly but steadily, contributed to the improvement of the scalability of blockchain networks, as well as providing new functionality and use cases,(32) but there is still a long way to go until mass adoption. In this article, we dive into the rabbit hole of blockchain interoperability and explain why it is needed, what has work been done in the last decade (the past), how it is currently deployed and used in practice (the present), and likely paths of development (the future).

Green cryptocurrency and business strategies: Framework and insights from a stewardship literature review

【Abstract】This study critically evaluates the extant research on green cryptocurrency (GC). It incorporates the systematic literature review (SLR) approach of research executed through the analysis and compilation of 54 relevant studies. The focus is on identifying and interpreting the thematic foci and existing gaps about GC to inform potential areas of future research. The SLR findings aggregated the research around key themes: interconnectedness, portfolio diversification, environmental impact, green blockchain, behavioral impact, and regulatory policy. Additionally, the study develops the research profile of the selected studies in terms of data analysis methodology, research findings, variables investigated, and critical knowledge gaps in the literature corpus. The study proffers an integrated framework and actionable inferences for supporting the merits of novel research and regulatory project applications in GC. It is crucial for understanding and advancing research in the GC domain, which currently has scant academic literature and efforts toward sustainable investment.

Considering the cascade threat in the food supply chain for the retailer's "blockchain & contamination prevention effort" strategic deployment

【Abstract】Food contamination causes a serious risk to public health and results in large financial losses when it occurs frequently. We consider the role of blockchain in food contamination and explore its implications for the strategic deployment of retailer contamination prevention effort. A supply chain with two suppliers and one retailer was proposed in this study. Supply chain participants may take out contamination prevention efforts to lessen the probability of food contamination. Among them, the retailer can trace the source of food contamination through the implementation of blockchain to reduce the loss of profits from the cascade threat. We developed a gametheoretic model to explore the strategic deployment of the retailer's contamination prevention effort with and without blockchain and the impact of implementing blockchain on strategic deployment and food safety. The intuition is that implementing blockchain always benefits supply chain members. However, counterintuitively, the retailer may not be able to realize greater profits. Interestingly, for contamination-vulnerable food (CVF), having blockchain increases suppliers and the retailer collaboration. Collaboration becomes less likely for contamination-resistant food (CRF). Finally, it is important to note that the implementation of blockchain, for CVF, will reduce the food contamination probability. But for CRF, it may not.

Os-elm based storage strategy for efficient query in blockchain database

【Abstract】Blockchain is widely used in supply chain systems due to its decentralization and security characteristics. However, with the outbreak of COVID-19, the supply chain systems need to have a more efficient query speed to meet the demand of origin-tracing. This paper proposes a hot block storage strategy to reduce the response time of data queries for blockchain-based supply chain systems. First, the architecture of the hot block storage strategy based on Online Sequential Extreme Learning Machine (OS-ELM) is designed, which includes the sharding-based blockchain module, the feature extraction module and the classifier module. Secondly, the fixed feature of the blocks, the node performance and other three features are considered to comprehensively evaluate the hot blocks for blockchain nodes. Third, the update algorithm for hot blocks is presented to ensure the persistence of efficient query. The experimental results show that the new strategy effectively improves the data query speed. Meanwhile, compared with the existing machine learning methods, the proposed OS-ELM-based strategy can significantly reduce the training time under the premise of ensuring the accuracy of classification when new training data is added. The OS-ELM-based storage strategy can achieve quick origin-tracing for blockchain-based supply chains and is suitable for the systems with rapidly increasing data.

Ghost-Weight protocol: a highly efficient blockchain consensus for IoT

【Abstract】Blockchain technology, with its decentralized nature, offers a more secure, reliable, and transparent solution for the Internet of Things (IoT). However, directly deploying existing consensus protocols in many IoT environments can limit scalability, lead to high computational costs and delays, and fail to meet the high responsiveness required for network communication. Additionally, IoT devices vary widely in performance, and lower-performance devices participating as nodes in a decentralized network may not be able to meet the demands of the consensus process, resulting in consensus delays and decreased system stability. This proposal introduces an improved consensus protocol called Ghost-Weight, based on the original Ghost protocol, designed to accommodate the performance-heterogeneous IoT environment with frequent information exchanges. Ghost-Weight introduces the concept of a Dominant Block, which, through a mechanism called the Confinement Edge, incorporates forked blocks within the network in a graph-based manner. The ForkBlock Process then organizes these blocks, removes conflicting transactions, and ultimately achieves global consensus based on weight before publishing them to the network. Furthermore, the protocol proposes a node partitioning strategy, ensuring that devices of all performance levels can participate in the consensus process. Through experiments and theoretical comparisons, we demonstrate that this protocol achieves a 52% increase in throughput, a 23% improvement in transaction confirmation time, and a 56% higher efficiency in processing forked blocks compared to the original Ghost protocol. We also designed a series of experiments to showcase Ghost-Weight's success in resisting selfish mining attacks and balancing attacks. This proposal effectively addresses the challenge of deploying consensus mechanisms in performance-heterogeneous IoT environments with high responsiveness requirements. Compared to previous designs, it significantly improves network scalability, transaction speed, network efficiency, and overall reliability.

【Abstract】A BSTRACT . Rising global population and increased demand for fresh food, especially in developing countries, underscore the critical need to address postharvest losses to ensure food security. Effective postharvest practices, supply chain management, and technology are key factors to sustaining produce quality. However, the magnitude and nature of these factors vary between developed and developing countries. Developed countries tend to have more efficient supply chain management systems, a highly skilled workforce, and greater access to advanced technologies, leading to a higher level of produce quality and fewer postharvest losses. In contrast, developing countries often suffer from inadequate infrastructure, a lack of access to modern technologies, a lack of skills to properly grade, sort, package, transport, and store produce, as well as poor quality control. Addressing these issues through improved supply chain management, the adoption of appropriate technologies, and training and education could lead to a reduction in postharvest losses, produce quality that is maintained, and a safer, more secure food supply. This article presents a scoping review of literature on postharvest factors, technologies, and practices resulting in the deterioration and losses of fruits and vegetables in fresh food supply chains, with an emphasis on developing countries. Existing and emerging technologies and supply chain management practices that maintain quality and facilitate the delivery of high-quality produce were highlighted. First, a conceptual framework for supply chains is presented to guide discussion on technical, economic, and policy opportunities and to provide insights that may strengthen the resilience of food systems in developing countries. Next, techniques and practices used in the produce industry were summarized, including how effective supply chain management can maintain quality and reduce postharvest losses at key distribution stages. Finally, recent literature on technology, applications, and barriers to adoption is presented, and strategies to strengthen supply chain resilience in developing countries are discussed.
