Digital forest recreation in the metaverse: Opportunities and challenges

【Abstract】The metaverse could provide a new way of interacting with nature through immersive three-dimensional virtual worlds. This digital nature recreation has the potential to shape users' perceptions, knowledge, and behavior toward nature. Despite this potential, its user demand is currently unknown. This study analyzes the demand for digital forest recreation in the metaverse by conducting a discrete choice experiment with university students as potential metaverse users to fill this knowledge gap. The study results revealed that users preferred digital forest recreation to experience outdoor adventure and a nature-based digital twin in the metaverse, indicating that digital forest recreation has the potential to influence human-nature interactions. The students required responsible and immersive metaverse platforms for digital forest recreation that were not subject to invasions of user privacy (e.g., selling big data of users), biased algorithms (e.g., racism), algorithms selling virtual goods, cyberaggression (e.g., trolling), and less immersive virtual experiences. These findings highlight both opportunities and challenges for creating user-centered digital forest recreation in the metaverse. The research contributes to understanding potential interactions between technological, social, and ecological systems.

Tail connectedness between lending/borrowing tokens and commercial bank stocks

【Abstract】This paper explores a fresh topic about the tail connectedness between decentralized-lending/borrowing tokens and centralized-commercial bank stocks, regarded as substitutes. Using the methodological approach proposed by Ando et al. (2022), we compare connectedness results at extreme (lower and upper) quantile levels. DeFis and traditional bank stocks may show positive but low spillovers, thus DeFi lending tokens would constitute a new commercial banking asset class. In addition, the tails of the distribution would show excess return (static and dynamic) spillover compared to the mean and median, indicating an increased sensitivity in the extreme market conditions (such as the COVID-19 pandemic), especially in the left tail. The dynamic net spillovers may vary over time for all markets and increase during periods of uncertainty, in line with very recent studies. Also, RTD (Relative Tail Dependence) rejects quasy-symmetry due to its time-variation, ranging between positive and negative values. Therefore, traders and portfolio managers would need to adjust their positions depending on the time-varying net spillovers.

Time and frequency connectedness of green equity indices: Uncovering a socially important link to Bitcoin

【Abstract】Green investment funds continue to interest as a sustainable non-conventional asset class. We examine their interconnectedness, using network and wavelet analyses, with both traditional and non-traditional financial assets. Results indicate that global stock market performance, along with the returns of emerging markets, commodity markets, and FinTech are strongly correlated with green indices. However, in comparison, Bitcoin is found to be isolated, as confirmed by wavelet analyses. When considering the evolution of green investment indices, their role as diversifiers to Bitcoin is especially interesting, suggesting many potential benefits for investors and policymakers. Perhaps the most prominent application of our results is for Bitcoin investors to consider more closely investing in green funds as an offset to concerns about the negative environmental consequences of investing in proof-of-work cryptocurrencies.

【Abstract】Due to the complexity of blockchain technology, it usually costs too much effort to build, maintain and monitor a blockchain system that supports a targeted application. To this end, the emerging "Blockchain as a Service" (BaaS) makes the blockchain and distributed ledgers more accessible, particularly for businesses, by reducing costs and overheads. BaaS combines the high computing power of cloud computing, the pervasiveness of IoT and the decentralization of blockchain, allowing people to build their own applications while ensuring the transparency and openness of the system. This paper surveys the research outputs of both academia and industry. First, it introduces the representative architectures of BaaS systems and then summarizes the research contributions of BaaS from the technologies for service provision, roles, container and virtualization, interfaces, customization and evaluation. The typical applications of BaaS in both academic and practical domains are also introduced. At present, the research on the blockchain is abundant, but research on BaaS is still in its infancy. Six challenges of BaaS are concluded in this paper for further study directions.

Blockchain-based verifiable and dynamic multi-keyword ranked searchable encryption scheme in cloud computing

【Abstract】Rational miners in the blockchain may admit the validity of search results directly to conserve calculation overhead without executing the validation. Such phenomenon is known as the Verifier's Dilemma that the search results of the blockchain-based searchable encryption scheme would be claimed to have been verified but devoid of valid verification. Besides, the top-k query technique utilized by most existing searchable encryption schemes fails to filter the search results from the user demands during retrieval, which results in massive ineffective access lists with high complexity. Aiming at the two problems, we present a blockchain-based multi-keyword ranked searchable encryption scheme and design a fair payment protocol for multi-user scenarios. Our scheme may achieve public verifiability and user fairness by leveraging the TrueBit network, while the data owner (DO) can withdraw search privileges from the authorized data user (DU). Also, we extend the searchable encryption scheme based on inverted index to multi-DO/multi-DU scenarios, and the HashMap index is used to diminish the response time and space complexity. Moreover, the proposed scheme supports the update of index keywords and files dynamically. To enhance retrieval accuracy, we modify the information divergence algorithm in machine learning and utilize the monotonically weighted aggregation function, which improves retrieval accuracy to around 97%. Finally, Security analysis illustrates correctness and resilience against typical attacks to verify the robustness and utility of the proposed scheme.

【Abstract】The business activity is inseparable from the support of documental information flow. In the past, the commercial documents needed a lot of time to get to the point-to-point, which could lead to problems, such as insecurity or the relatively long time. With the emergence of new technologies, it is possible to change this information transmission method to enable fast and accurate dissemination. For considering the possibility of technology adoption, this study investigates the role of blockchain service in term of market size and file circulation time. Specifically, we construct a game-theoretic model to find the equilibrium strategy from a manufacturer and two competing retailers. From the perspective of equilibrium, we investigate the results for market effects, economic effects, service effects, and service efficiency, respectively. Moreover, we also analyze the service strategy of retailers providing service by manufacturer, time sensitivity, and competitive intensity, respectively. Based on the above analysis, this study has obtained an equilibrium to support the commercial practice. In summary, this study has two contributions. On the one hand, we analyze the impact of the technological investment in blockchain service on asymmetric market scale competition. This result extends the application scope of blockchain service in the market. On the other hand, this study discusses the impact of time value on technology investment in blockchain service. Therefore, through the discussion of our study, the results show the value of blockchain service in information exchanges.

【Abstract】A package repository is an essential piece of a software ecosystem. In FOSS, the software repositories are oftentimes hosted using limited donations, given the technical solutions adopted in the implementation. This work proposes a package repository using Blockchains with experiments and statistics based on a real-world scenario. The Blockchain described has its consensus algorithm crafted to befit the purpose of a package repository without financial appeal; Also, the proposed Blockchain keeps a compatible layer with the traditional repositories, easing its adoption. Furthermore, this work also presents a package search over peer-to-peer, computed on untrusted nodes, yet guaranteeing that the results are trusted. Finally, we present a functional Blockchain that cohesively exposes the PyPi catalog.

【Abstract】We survey extant literature on the economics of blockchain fundamentals, with particular focus on Bitcoin, proof-of-work, and proof-of-stake. We formally clarify Bitcoin's economic significance in solving the double-spending problem without a centralized entity. We then transition to the economics literature, highlighting the key endogenous economic interactions among participants in the Bitcoin ecosystem as well as the economics of proof-of-stake and other potential consensus algorithms. Along the way, we discuss various literature that provides important insights regarding fees, forks, and price volatility. We conclude by reflecting on the next generation of blockchain innovations.

Some Simple Economics of Stablecoins

【Abstract】Stablecoins have the potential to drastically increase competition and innovation in financial services by reducing our reliance on traditional intermediaries. But they also introduce new challenges, as regulators rely on intermediaries to ensure financial stability, market integrity, and consumer protection. Because they operate at the interface between traditional banking and cryptocurrencies, stablecoins also represent an ideal setting for understanding the key trade-offs cryptocurrencies involve, and insights from robust stablecoin design and regulation are highly relevant for related innovations in decentralized finance (DeFi), nonfungible tokens, and Web3 protocols. In this review, we describe the following: key stablecoin design choices, from reserve composition to stability mechanism; legal claim against the issuer; noninterference with macroeconomic stability; and interoperability with public sector payment rails and central bank digital currencies. Last, we cover the key benefits of stablecoins in the context of real-time, low-cost programmable payments, financial inclusion, and DeFi.

An Attribute-Based Access Control Model for Internet of Things Using Hyperledger Fabric Blockchain

【Abstract】The Internet of Things (IoT) is emerging from its infancy and establishing itself as a component of the future Internet. However, the ability to manage a huge number of IoT devices is one of the IoT technical challenges. To implement access control, traditional schemes typically rely on a trusted central organization. Traditional centralized access control systems of the IoT lead to the shortcomings of a single point of failure, low overall system efficiency, and ethical and privacy issues. To overcome such challenges, an attribute-based access control model using Hyperledger Fabric blockchain (ABAC-HLFBC) is proposed in this paper. By adopting ABAC, it is no longer to create access control lists (ACLs) or assign roles to all system users. Instead, ABAC grants access based on the attributes presented by the target. No one is permitted access unless he/she possesses sufficient attributes that correspond to the access policy. The Hyperledger Fabric Raft consensus mechanism has been used to verify the transaction on the proposed model because it has a demanding feature for faster and less complicated consensus in comparison to the Kafka ordering service. To evaluate the proposed model, it has been tested against the most recent previous work, called fabric-iot model. The proposed model has been tested and evaluated in two parts. The first part tests the cost time using a client test program written in Golang. The second part tests the latency and throughput using the Hyperledger Caliper benchmark tool. Results show that the proposed model efficiently outperforms the previous work in terms of the performance metrics mentioned above.

An IoV-PBFT Consensus-Based Blockchain for Collaborative Congestion Avoidance and Simulation Test

【Abstract】This paper proposes a novel Internet of Vehicles (IoV) practical Byzantine fault tolerance (PBFT) consensus mechanism suitable for the distributed vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) scenario and the V2V collaborative congestion avoidance mechanism based on blockchain. Compared with the traditional PBFT consensus mechanism, the proposed IoV-PBFT consensus mechanism has been improved in three aspects. (1) The authenticated vehicles are divided into three types including common nodes, production nodes, and verification nodes. The vehicles in the same congestion road section are used as the consensus participation nodes, which are divided into the production node and verification node. Since the vehicles in this section are moving slowly or even stopping and the number of newly added and departing nodes are less, the identity of the previous nodes is verified before each round of consensus, which ensures the dynamic tolerance with less additional delay. (2) The verification nodes are grouped based on path loss, and the nodes with good channel quality are selected as the leader nodes. (3) The main node in traditional PBFT is omitted, and the two-stage process is used instead of the traditional three-stage process, which effectively reduces the consensus delay and communication complexity. The theoretical derivation and simulation results show that the proposed IoV-PBFT has greatly improved the V2V link quality compared with traditional PBFT, and the success ratio of links between nodes can reach more than 93%, which has met the requirements of establishing blockchain in IoV.

Data-centric approaches in the Internet of Vehicles: A systematic review on techniques, open issues, and future directions

【Abstract】The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is an emerging network of connected vehicles as a branch of dynamic objects in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. With the rapid development of IoV, real-time data-centric applications would be a significant concern in academia and industry to promote efficiency and realize modern services in such high dynamic networks. In this paper, we aim to present a systematic literature review (SLR) for the IoV networks to investigate the different attitudes in the field of data-centric approaches. This paper systematically categorizes the 48 recent articles on data-driven techniques in the IoV field published from 2017 to March 2022. A complete technical taxonomy is presented for the data-centric approaches in IoV according to the content of current studies. Collected methods are chosen with the SLR process, and they are investigated considering some technical classifications including IoV security, data traffic, vehicular social network, data propagation, energy, and multimedia categories. The achievements, drawbacks, and new findings of studies are carefully investigated for addressing the deficiencies, as well as emphasizing future research direction and open issues of data-driven approaches in IoV.

【Abstract】With the integration of industrial Internet of Things technology and traditional industries, industrial Internet of Things has profoundly changed the production mode, organization mode, and business model of traditional industries. While people are enjoying the convenience brought by the Internet, their concerns about personal privacy are gradually increasing. Maintaining the value stability of RMB payment means and the security and efficiency of RMB settlement system are the key measures to promote the internationalization of RMB. Aiming at the problem of data insecurity and untrustworthiness in traditional information systems, this paper proposes a data protection technology for information systems based on blockchain. In the hierarchical authority information system, multichain structure is adopted to divide the authority of nodes in each layer, so that only the nodes with corresponding authority can access and operate data. Private digital currency, which is based on blockchain technology and represented by payment token and stable currency, helps to improve the defects of the agent banking model but increases additional market risks and trust risks. Blockchain technology adopts special networking technology and consensus mechanism. Therefore, in blockchain privacy protection, the focus of blockchain privacy protection is identity information and transaction information.

【摘要】在大数据与互联网的勃兴冲击下,人类社会的生活状态出现了向虚拟空间规模化迁移的趋势。当代社会的空间结构由物质空间、社会空间转向精神性空间,人类正演变为虚拟与现实的两栖物种。反观人类发展史,智人时代的文学、绘画与戏剧曾独霸前年,如今已在视觉造梦的影视及身临其境般的VR视听场域中摇晃不已。一系列需要正视并回答的问题有:“元宇宙”是否将改变人类的交往生态与感官维度?“数字孪生”“虚拟原生”和“虚拟融生”是否意味着催生人与人之间的诗意交流、文学生产和世界编辑?未来人类面临挑战。

【摘要】经历了信息化、数字化建设等发展阶段,元宇宙与文化产业之间的联系也越来越密切。结合元宇宙理念的丰富内涵和相关技术的发展,可以发现,元宇宙对文化产业链上、中、下游的发展均有着重要影响。而若从场、人、物三个维度看,元宇宙与文化产业的结构、地位、产业关系和发展趋势等也都存在非常密切的关系。所以,在继承传统文化精髓的基础上,充分发挥元宇宙对文化产业的赋能作用,积极构建以基础、用户、服务、环境为基本内容的元宇宙文化产业生态圈,在理论和实践上都具有重要的意义。
