Will Metaverse Be NextG Internet? Vision, Hype, and Reality

【Abstract】Metaverse, with the combination of the prefix "meta" (meaning transcending) and the word "universe," has been deemed as a hypothetical next-generation (NextG) Internet. It aims to create a shared virtual space that connects all virtual worlds via the Internet, where users, represented as digital avatars, can communicate and collaborate as if they are in the physical world. Nevertheless, there is still no unified definition of the Metaverse. This article first reviews what has been heavily advocated by the industry and the positions of various high-tech companies. It then presents our vision of what the key requirements of Metaverse should be. After that, it briefly introduces existing social virtual reality (VR) platforms that can be viewed as early prototypes of the Metaverse, and conducts a reality check by diving into the network operation and performance of two representative platforms: Workrooms from Meta and AltspaceVR from Microsoft. Finally, it concludes by discussing several opportunities and future directions for further innovation.

The metaverse as a breakthrough for operations and supply chain management: implications and call for action

【Abstract】Purpose - The metaverse development is in the early stages in most organizations and supply chains. There has been exponential growth in metaverse investments by leading tech and other types of companies and governments worldwide. This article aims to shed light on the topic by providing detailed insights for the operations and supply chain management (O & SCM) community concerning the potential, opportunities and challenges associated with the metaverse.Design/methodology/approach - The authors mapped 15 benefits and 15 challenges regarding metaverse in O & SCM-related fields from the literature, which in turn were empirically tested by a panel with 150 experts from more than 12 countries, from operations and supply chains and with experience in metaverse technologies.Findings - The authors found notable similarities and differences between metaverse adopters and non-adopters in the O & SCM. Accordingly, some benefits and challenges are expected before and after the implementation, but it's still relevant. In contrast, there are ones that change their importance after the implementation.Research limitations/implications - First, this paper points out the need for an urgent call for action to develop high-quality research on the interplay between metaverse and O & SCM. Second, the metaverse will reshape several established business models by offering new products and services, consequently resulting in the remodeling of O & SCM. Third, our paper provides a call for action to engage the community of scholars and practitioners to consider the metaverse as one of the last frontiers of O & SCM in the digital age.Originality/value - This paper is one of the first that investigates the metaverse benefits, challenges and expectations in the O & SCM. Also, it provides robust directions by an empirical approach to the metaverse as a new and important research stream for O & SCM and related fields. The authors provide a prospective research agenda that scholars and practitioners could use as a roadmap to capture metaverse opportunities in O & SCM.

Smart contract watermarking based on code obfuscation

【Abstract】Most blockchains are entirely open-source software. This gives auditors ability to review the security of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Because only after the source code of the cryptocurrency has been publicly audited by the market, users can transfer their tokens in a secure manner. However, the open-source feature has led to frequent plagiarism of smart contracts and introduces the risk of vulnerability proliferation. Copyright protection for smart contracts has never been investigated thoroughly. Due to performance overhead problems, some traditional watermarking techniques are no longer suitable for smart contracts running in a distributed environment. To reduce the negative impact of watermark implantation on processing performance, we use opaque predicate obfuscation to inject watermarks. Further, we propose a novel layout obfuscation via spaces and tabs to completely eliminate the negative performance impact. We conduct comprehensive experiments to evaluate our scheme. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme.

AC/DC: Adaptive Cutoffs and Disputable Cutoffs for Robust Critical Transactions in Smart-Contracts

【Abstract】To guarantee delivery of their intended functionalities in the presence of unresponsive parties, current smart-contracts cut users off from being able to commit their responses after a fixed period of time has elapsed. However, current blockchains have limited transaction processing capacities, so a fixed amount of time will not always be sufficient to receive every critical transaction (C-TX). This paper presents a mechanism for adaptive cutoffs (ACs) which ensures that users retain the opportunity to commit C-TXs despite blockchain congestion, and enables early cutoffs when the number of required C-TXs is low. A non-interactive argument system for setting adaptive cutoffs under the current Ethereum Virtual Machine is described. Additionally, disputable cutoffs (DCs) are presented, which are a more efficient approach used in parallel to ACs based on a bisection-based dispute. Furthermore, it's empirically demonstrated that an AC/DC-enabled smart-contract can receive a larger number of C-TXs than its non-adaptive counterparts when user responsiveness is slowed due to denial of service or congestion.

Multi-Party Payment Channel Network Based on Smart Contract

【Abstract】Blockchain-based cryptocurrencies are severely limited in transaction throughput and latency. A promising solution to this issue is a payment channel, which allows trust-free payments between two peers without exhausting the resources of the blockchain. A linked payment channel network (PCN) enables payments between two peers through a series of intermediate nodes that forward and charge for the payments. However, most of existing proposals only use the shortest path as the path of the transaction, which causes the frequently reused channels to be exhausted quickly. In addition, most of existing PCNs are almost only designed for payments between two parties, which leads to limited application scenarios. When multiple payments use the same intermediate channel, the two-party PCNs cannot achieve simultaneous payments. In this paper, we propose a multi-party payment channel (MPC) network, a payment channel proposal that supports multiple payments using the same intermediate channel simultaneously, thereby greatly expanding the application scenarios of payment channels. In addition, our channel selection and transaction conversion strategies can also increase the success rate of transactions. We implement MPC network in the simulated blockchain network and lightning network based on Truffle, and a large number of experiments verify the effectiveness of our solution.

【Abstract】The Metaverse is 'an integrated network of 3D virtual worlds.' It incorporates digitally created realities into the real world, involves virtual copies of existing places and changes the physical reality by superimposing digital aspects, allowing its users to interact with these elements in an immersive, real-time experience. The applications of the Metaverse are numerous, with an increasing number of experiences in the field of musculoskeletal disease management. In the field of medical training, the Metaverse can help facilitate the learning experience and help develop complex clinical skills. In clinical care, the Metaverse can help clinicians perform orthopedic surgery more accurately and safely and can improve pain management, the performance of rehabilitation techniques and the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Virtualization can also optimize aspects of healthcare information and management, increasing the effectiveness of procedures and the functioning of organizations. This optimization can be especially relevant in departments that are under significant care provider pressure. However, we must not lose sight of the fundamental challenges that still need to be solved, such as ensuring patient privacy and fairness. Several studies are underway to assess the feasibility and safety of the Metaverse.

Traceability Management System Using Blockchain Technology and Cost Estimation in the Metrology Field

【Abstract】Metrological traceability is essential to ensure the reliability of calibration tests. Calibration certificates usually include information on only one upper-level reference standard. As metrological traceability is multi-layered, generally there is no method available for end users to instantly confirm the traceability from the reference standard to a primary standard. This study focuses on the Ethereum blockchain, which has both tamper resistance and high availability, as a digital data management method. To improve the transparency and reliability of calibration tests, a smart contract that traces back to the primary standard is proposed. Consequently, it is confirmed that end users can instantly obtain traceability information. In addition, the execution of smart contracts requires transaction fees. Here, the calculation of the transaction fees is organized, and the traceability management system is discussed from a cost-effective perspective in the field of metrology.

A Sustainable Approach to Delivering Programmable Peer-to-Peer Offline Payments

【Abstract】Payment apps and digital wallets are powerful tools used to exchange e-money via the internet. However, with the progressive disappearance of cash, there is a need for the digital equivalent of physical banknotes to guarantee the same level of anonymity of private payments. Few efforts to solve the double-spending problem exist in P2P payments (i.e., in avoiding the possibility of a payer retaining copies of digital coins in absence of a trusted third party (TTP)), and further research efforts are needed to explore options to preserve the privacy of payments, as per the mandates of numerous central bank digital currency (CBDC) exploratory initiatives, such as the digital euro. Moreover, generic programmability requirements and energetic impacts should be considered. In this paper, we present a sustainable offline P2P payment scheme to face the double-spending problem by means of a one-time program (OTP) approach. The approach consists of wiping the business logic out of a client's app and allowing financial intermediaries to inject a certified payment code into the user's device, which will execute (asynchronously and offline) at the time of payment. To do so, we wrap each coin in a program at the time of withdrawal. Then the program exploits the trusted execution environment (TEE) of modern smartphones to transfer itself from the payer to the payee via a direct IoT link. To confirm the validity of the approach, we performed qualitative and quantitative evaluations, specifically focusing on the energetic sustainability of the proposed scheme. Results show that our payment scheme is energetically sustainable as the current absorbed for sending one coin is, at most, similar to 1.8 mAh on an Apple smartphone. We advance the state-of-the-art because the scheme meets the programmability, anonymity, and sustainability requirements (at the same time).

Practical Limitations of Ethereum's Layer-2

【Abstract】Most permissionless blockchains inherently suffer from throughput limitations. Layer-2 systems, such as side-chains or Rollups, have been proposed as a possible strategy to overcome this limitation. Layer-2 systems interact with the main-chain in two ways. First, users can move funds from/to the main-chain to/from the layer-2. Second, layer-2 systems periodically synchronize with the main-chain to keep some form of log of their activity on the main-chain - this log is key for security. Due to this interaction with the main-chain, which is necessary and recurrent, layer-2 systems impose some load on the main-chain. The impact of such load on the main-chain has been, so far, poorly understood. In addition to that, layer-2 approaches typically sacrifice decentralization and security in favor of higher throughput. This paper presents an experimental study that analyzes the current state of Ethereum layer-2 projects. Our goal is to assess the load they impose on Ethereum and to understand their scalability potential in the long-run. Our analysis shows that the impact of any given layer-2 on the main-chain is the result of both technical aspects (how state is logged on the main-chain) and user behavior (how often users decide to transfer funds between the layer-2 and the main-chain). Based on our observations, we infer that without efficient mechanisms that allow users to transfer funds in a secure and fast manner directly from one layer-2 project to another, current layer-2 systems will not be able to scale Ethereum effectively, regardless of their technical solutions. Furthermore, from our results, we conclude that the layer-2 systems that offer similar security guarantees as Ethereum have limited scalability potential, while approaches that offer better performance, sacrifice security and lead to an increase in centralization which runs against the end-goals of permissionless blockchains.

【Abstract】Over the past decade, there has been significant evolution in the security field, specifically in the authentication and authorization part. The standard authentication protocol nowadays is OAuth 2.0-based authentication. This method relies on a third-party authentication service provider with complete control over the users' data, which it can filter or modify at will. Blockchain and decentralization have generated much interest in recent years, and the decentralized web is considered the next significant improvement in the world wide web (also known as Web 3.0). Web3 authentication, also known as decentralized authentication, allows for the secure and decentralized authentication of users on the web. The use cases for this technology include online marketplaces, social media platforms, and other online communities that require user authentication. The advantages of Web3 authentication include increased security and privacy for users and the ability for users to have more control over their data. The proposed system implementation uses Ethereum as the blockchain and a modern web stack to enhance user interaction and usability. The solution brings benefits both to the private and the public sector, proving that it has the capability of becoming the preferred authentication mechanism for any decentralized web application.

Tracking Tangible Asset Ownership and Provenance with Blockchain

【Abstract】Blockchain transactions are recorded in a shared and append-only repository that multiple parties verify, validate, and agree upon. While initially used to keep track of digital assets, blockchains now track the ownership and provenance of tangible assets. An inherent challenge in using blockchain for this task involves keeping the status of a tangible asset in the physical world in sync with its non-fungible token on a blockchain. While several blockchains are already being used in this manner, specific implementation details are fragmented. In response, this study examines four stages of tracking tangible assets using a consortium's permissioned blockchain, including: design and governance of a blockchain, asset creation, asset transfer, and asset retirement. Based on this analysis, this study proposes a framework of risk considerations and control objectives to evaluate the extent to which a unique blockchain serves as a reliable transaction repository for tracking the ownership and provenance of tangible assets.

【Abstract】In this article I explore the fundamental tension in the world of Bitcoin between 'maximalists', who see Bitcoin as a tool for the promo-tion of a moral revolution, and 'traders', who approach Bitcoin pragmati-cally as a financial tool. Based on ethnography of a crypto gold rush that took place in the Bitcoin Embassy in Tel Aviv, I argue that, despite heu-ristic distinctions, both of these attitudes advance egalitarian tendencies. While maximalists offer a sense of belonging to a close-knit community of equals, traders promote the nominal equality of all value-making strat-egies in an open financial environment. I use the terms 'ideational' and 'materialist' to characterize these two modes of practice, which realize contemporary visions of egalitarian life in different forms.

【摘要】元宇宙进入大众视野以来,不仅成为深受关注的前沿热点,而且占据资本布局的重要位置。元宇宙的未来形态将其沉浸式特征在场景化、具身传播、持续在场以及社交融合等方面加以显现。沉浸从形式和意境两方面呈现了对于美学的极致追求,同时,元宇宙的构建蕴含人类解放的美学幻境,但加速背景下的元宇宙难以延续这种美学追求。现代性引发的“空洞在场”、技术理性诱发的“单向度的人”以及全景敞视触发的人的“规训”危机,加速了元宇宙空间中人的异化以及美学的消弭。因此,元宇宙空间的美学研究亟需一种政治转向。面对繁杂的现代社会,对元宇宙的审美思考要依托感性对理性的反思,增强两者的融合性与超越性,进而形成一种审美智性。在这一思路下,元宇宙的未来路径应秉持合理把握沉浸距离、平等之维的权力治理以及差别与本质共存的共同体原则,加快实现完满理想的追求。

【摘要】在大数据背景下,保证数据可信共享是数据联邦的基本要求.区块链技术代替传统的主从架构,可以提高联邦学习(federated learning,FL)的安全性.然而,现有工作中,模型参数验证与数据持久化所产生的巨大通信成本和存储消耗,已经成为数据联邦中亟待解决的问题.针对上述问题,设计了一种高效的去中心化联邦学习框架(efficient decentralized federated learning framework, EDFL),能够降低存储开销,并显著提升FL的学习效率.首先,提出了一种基于贡献度证明(proof-of-contribution)的共识机制,使得区块生成者的选举基于历史贡献度而不采用竞争机制,从而有效发避免了挖矿过程产生的区块生成延迟,并以异步方式缓解模型参数验证中的阻塞问题;其次,提出了一种角色自适应激励算法,因为该算法基于节点的工作强度和EDFL所分配的角色,所以能够激励合法节点更积极地进行模型训练,并有效地识别出恶意节点;再者,提出一种区块链分区存储策略,使得多重局部修复编码块(local reconstruction code)可被均匀地分布到网络的各个节点上,进而降低节点的本地存储代价,并实现了较高的数据恢复效率;最后,在真实的FEMNIST数据集上,对EDFL的学习效率、存储可扩展性和安全性进行了评估.实验结果表明, EDFL在以上3个方面均优于主流的基于区块链的FL框架.

【摘要】作为一种非当局发行且不与法定货币挂钩的虚拟货币,数字货币凭借高安全性及低交易成本等优势被公众所接受而被应用于支付、存储及交易中。受自身特性影响,数字货币在流转程序、交易方式等方面与法定货币及一般商品存在较大差异。由于当前并未制定统一的数字资产会计准则,企业所开展的数字货币会计处理并不统一。鉴于此,本文对美国及我国企业当前数字货币资产的确认、计量及列报披露进行全面阐述,并开展深入对比分析,明确我国企业当前数字货币会计处理中存在的问题,借鉴美国相应经验提出优化建议,从而为我国企业准确实施数字货币会计处理提供一定参考。

【摘要】会计信息系统被定位为企业管理信息系统中一个面向价值信息的子系统,需要以提高会计综合能力、完善系统内部控制、实现实时反馈作为构建重点。跨境电子商务企业会计信息数据化、系统化程度更高,有待解决的业务痛点更多。基于区块链技术构建分布式会计信息系统,能够精准把握行业发展趋势,实现对原有系统的有效改进。将构建的分布式会计信息系统应用于跨境电子交易的各个环节,发挥权限管理、加密传输以及自动交易等机制,能够成为企业新的竞争力来源和价值增长点。

服务激励在区块链无线节点的安全性优化研究

【摘要】物联网的边缘计算节点引入区块链技术,有效拓展了物联网区块链的应用领域和价值,但区块链无线节点依旧存在安全隐患.为提高节点安全性,提出一种服务激励算法.首先,选择多维指标,通过区块链节点初始化计算出服务提供节点的指标评分;接着,对得分较低的指标通过算法自动计算设置较高的占比,按照占比合并得到新信任评分,新旧信任评分合并时考虑参与评价的消费节点信任评分;其次,对低于标准评分的节点设置激励措施并重复算法过程,鼓励各服务节点提高自身评分;最后,将信任评分通过智能合约广播至区块链中.对比ATA算法和TC算法,仿真实验结果表明,在恶意节点占比不同和物联网节点数量逐渐增加的情况下,服务激励算法的节点评估准确度更高,系统通信时延更低.

【摘要】随着双碳目标的提出,火电厂碳减排变得至关重要.碳配额是促进碳减排的有效政策.基准线值是碳配额的依据,科学划定基准线离不开高质量的火电厂碳排放数据.为防止碳排放数据被篡改及提升交互效率,提出通信链-存储链双链结构,设计具有双链结构的火电厂碳排放数据保真区块链架构.仿真实验结果表明:该文设计的具有双链结构的火电厂碳排放数据保真区块链架构的信息响应时间比点对点交互的区块链架构的信息响应时间短.因此,该文区块链架构的信息交互效率比点对点交互的区块链架构的信息交互效率高.
