Blockchain technology for distributed generation: A review of current development, challenges and future prospect

【Abstract】The non-transparency of a centralised power system creates security issues in energy trading, and the inability of prosumers to participate in energy trading arose. Blockchain can be applied in distributed generation (DG) with its immutability, security, decentralised, transparency, anonymity, transactional data, and automation features to resolve the mentioned concerns. The applications of DG, such as renewable energy sources (RES), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), solar energy, microgrid and other new electrical components, require the need decen-tralised energy management with secured data ledger transactional record and peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading. The research gaps and limitations are stated to point out the potential future prospect and recom-mendations. Overall, the blockchain is beneficial to be implemented in DG in terms of security enhancement, P2P energy trading, immutable transactional records and transparent transactions. As compared to the centralised system, the decentralised blockchain enables the scalability, privacy, autonomous trading, anonymity, legitimate auditing and low latency of DG operations. This study serves as a guide to accelerating the adoption of block -chain technology in the emerging DG. The research outcome of this review is a wider perspective of blockchain applicability and versatility in the DG sector in terms of decentralisation of grid operation, P2P energy trading and energy optimisation. The review also highlights the limitations and clarifies technical issues concerning the implementations of blockchain in the DG sector, the current applications and development trends and possible future recommendations for the blockchain in advancing the DG sector.

Privacy-preserving targeted mobile advertising: A Blockchain-based framework for mobile ads

【Abstract】The targeted advertising is based on preference profiles inferred via relationships among individuals, their monitored responses to previous advertising and temporal activity over the Internet, which has raised critical privacy concerns. In this paper, we present a novel proposal for a Blockchain-based advertising platform that provides: a system for privacy preserving user profiling, privately requesting ads from the advertising system, the billing mechanisms for presented and clicked ads, the advertising system that uploads ads to the cloud according to profiling interests, various types of transactions to enable advertising operations in Blockchain-based network, and the method that allows a cloud system to privately compute the access policies for various resources (such as ads, mobile user profiles). Our main goal is to design a decentralised framework for targeted ads, which enables private delivery of ads to users whose behavioural profiles accurately match the presented ads, defined by the ad system. We implement a POC of our proposed framework i.e. a Bespoke Miner and experimentally evaluate various components of Blockchain-based in-app advertising system, implementing various critical components; such as, evaluating user profiles, implementing access policies, encryption and decryption of users' profiles. We observe that the processing delay for traversing policies of various tree sizes, the encryption/decryption time of user profiling with various key-sizes and user profiles of various interests evaluates to an acceptable amount of processing time as that of the currently implemented ad systems.

Initial Coin Offerings: a Hybrid Empirical Review

【Abstract】This study reviews initial coin offerings (ICOs) based on 80 empirical studies from 2018 to 2022. We apply a blend of bibliometric and content analysis to consolidate ICOs' prior findings, track the evolutionary impact, and explore the semantic discourse and underlying theories in entrepreneurial finance. The content analysis concludes with five main streams that extensively explain the advent of ICOs, main features, embedded technologies, pricing, valuation, regulatory frameworks, frauds, and scams. It contributes to a better understanding of the ICOs hype under the following contexts: benefits versus challenges, decentralised system versus market stability, speculative behaviour and herding versus market efficiency, and geographical spread versus systematic risk. The study is beneficial for portfolio managers, hedgers, wealth managers, investors, policymakers, regulators, and entrepreneurs.

nCare: Fault-aware edge intelligence for rendering viable sensor nodes

【Abstract】In remote sensor nodes, energy harvesters are used with rechargeable batteries as the power source. As these batteries undergo capacitance reduction, they degrade with each charge- discharge cycle. Most of the existing researches do not consider edge-based computation for battery health prediction. This paper proposes a smart, accurate, and reliable data-driven architecture, nCare, to predict the battery's health at low power and low computation costs. Three models are used for health prediction, two Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) models deployed at the sensor node - one to predict the State of Health (SoH) of the battery for the first few cycles and the second to predict the Remaining Useful Life (RUL) of battery. An AutoKeras model deployed at the gateway where it will be trained using the first 200 cycles. Then weight matrix and layer information will be sent to sensor nodes to replicate the model without training to predict SoH after 200 cycles. Two main parameters, battery temperature and elapsed time (ET), are used to predict the SoH, which is further used for RUL prediction. Furthermore, to prove the efficiency of the RUL prediction method, the calculated Absolute Error (AE), Relative Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Relative error (RE) are 0.019, 0.142, and 0.005, respectively for a battery of 730 cycles. This method helps the sensor node acquire intelligence that will be battery specific. Blockchain is used for maintaining the data integrity of the architecture. nCare thus ensures an effective and accurate solution for predicting the RUL of a battery.

Blockchain-enhanced cross-ISP spectrum assignment framework in SDONs: SpectrumChain

【Abstract】Huge potentials of optical networks provide an excellent choice in meeting the exponential growth in bandwidth demand. In particular, Elastic Optical Networks (EONs), with its promising potentials in increased availability, failure resilience, load-balancing, and efficient resource allocations, are good candidates for the future high-speed networks. When EONs are augmented with the emerging Software Defined Networking (SDN) architecture, which decouples the data and control planes, an agile and synergistic combination emerges under a general term of Software Defined Optical Networking (SDON), albeit with operational challenges such optimal and efficient spectrum assignments. In this paper, we present a blockchain-enhanced QoS-concentrated cross -Internet Service Provider (ISP) spectrum assignment framework for SDONs, SpectrumChain (SC), to eliminate centralized mediators while coordinating QoS-based inter-ISP traffic. This study introduces a new blockchain use-case with reduced QoS signaling overhead while performing inter-ISP routing in SDONs. We also experience the proposed framework under Hop-by-Hop Wavelength Switching (HWS), Border-Node-Only Wavelength Switching (BWS), and No Wavelength Switching (NWS) scenarios to analyze its performance. Our extensive simulation results show that the SC framework can effectively handle the QoS-enabled inter-ISP routing in SDON architecture in terms of Flow Setup Time (FST), Messages Processed (MEP), Requests Serviced (RS), and Acceptance Ratio (AR) metrics under HWS, BWS, and NWS scenarios.

Blockchain for achieving accountable outsourcing computations in edge computing

【Abstract】Edge Computing as a paradigm, provides services of outsourcing computations to a large number of end users. Since edge nodes are trustless, the integration of sampling-based replication calculation and the blockchain is used to verify the correctness of computation results in a trustless environment. However, the blockchain with the nature of decentralization, is confronted with some problems of high resource consumption, such that the verification with computational overhead cannot be directly deployed on the blockchain. Thus, we propose an accountable verification scheme based on an off-chain block. The off-chain block meets some requirements of Edge Computing, i.e., reduced latency of services, and edge nodes with heterogeneous resources. The off-chain block tries to address two challenges for reliable outsourcing computations: (i) how to generate the block efficiently and securely, and (ii) how to achieve accountable verification. In detail, the block is based on a Directed Acyclic Graph, in which the transactions of computation results and verification reports are updated in full decentralization. The hash of the block is recorded on the blockchain. Moreover, the integration of off-chain verification and on-chain arbitration provides reliable verification. A trust evaluation model achieves accountability for edge nodes. Besides, we conducted the security analysis based on some performance properties. Finally, the Raspberry Pis are leveraged to simulate lightweight edge nodes to prove the scalability of our outsourcing computations. A consortium blockchain with groups is also implemented to reveal the efficiency of blockchain updates of the proposed scheme.

The evolution of young gambling studies: digital convergence of gaming, gambling and cryptocurrency technologies

【Abstract】This paper provides an overview of how the focus of youth gambling research has evolved since the foundational work of the 1990s. Over the last two decades, research in youth gambling has advanced from having a principal focus on under-aged access to adult commercial activities to understanding the impact of gambling-like content in social media and gaming. The process of digital convergence and 'gamblification' has blurred the boundaries between activities, and the rise of gambling and gaming ecosystems. Research suggests that early exposure to gambling-like content (e.g. loot boxes or social casino games) may lead to a transition to commercial gambling. Here we provide an overview of current evidence, important technological developments and conceptual analyses; and, current directions in digital technology and their potential impact. The potential now exists for the merging of multiple classes of activity: gaming, gambling and speculative trading as a result of blockchain technology. The paper underscores the importance of the need for future studies to capture the breadth of gambling and gambling-like activities available to young people. It also indicates that pathways into gambling may arise within other population groups (e.g. gamers, digital asset investors) rather than from direct exposure to commercial gambling products.

Cryptocurrency is new vogue: a reflection on money laundering prevention

【Abstract】It has been argued that with the increasing crypto economy and the liquidity of cryptocurrency globally, cryptocurrency could potentially serve as another vehicle for money laundering activities. Yet, only a handful of studies probe the emerging nexus between cryptocurrency and money laundering and the feasibility of anti-money laundering (AML) strategies presented by law enforcement and financial institutions from a criminologist's perspective. Therefore, this study uses the literature on money laundering to analyze the features of cryptocurrency that account for its popularity. A money laundering triangle is presented that corresponds with the use of cryptocurrency from within a criminological framework. This study also suggests that in addition to domestic and international interagency cooperation across jurisdictions, future developments should target the characteristics of cryptocurrencies such as anonymity, decentralization and blockchain which could help make cryptocurrency usage less attractive to motivated offenders across money laundering stages.
