【Abstract】The proliferation of emergent network applications (e.g., telesurgery, metaverse) is increasing the difficulty of managing modern communication networks. These applications entail stringent network requirements (e.g., ultra-low deterministic latency), which hinders network operators in managing their resources efficiently. In this article, we introduce the network digital twin (NDT), a renovated concept of classical network modeling tools whose goal is to build accurate data-driven network models that can operate in real time. We describe the general architecture of the NDT and argue that modern machine learning (ML) technologies enable building some of its core components. Then we present a case study that leverages an ML-based NDT for network performance evaluation and apply it to routing optimization in a QoS-aware use case. Lastly, we describe some key open challenges and research opportunities yet to be explored to achieve effective deployment of NDTs in real-world networks.

【Abstract】Real-time holographic video communications enable immersive experiences for next-generation video services in the future metaverse era. However, high-fidelity holographic videos require high bandwidth and significant computation resources, which exceed the transferring and computing capacity of 5G networks. This article reviews state-of-the-art holographic point cloud video transmission techniques and highlights the critical challenges of delivering such immersive services. We further implement a preliminary prototype of an AI-driven holographic video communication system and present critical experimental results to evaluate its performance. Finally, we identify future research directions and discuss potential solutions for providing real-time and high-quality holographic experiences.

Distributed Secondary Control for Battery Management in a DC Microgrid

【Abstract】This research presents the design and simulation of a distributed secondary control based on a consensus algorithm for the efficient management of an isolated DC microgrid (MG-DC) that secures the distribution of active power according to the capacities of each storage unit, reducing duty cycles and extending its life cycle. The balance of powers is fulfilled through a photovoltaic (PV) generation unit and an energy storage system (ESS) based on batteries. The PV Boost converter has a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller based on the perturb and observe (P & O) method. In contrast, a Buck-Boost converter is integrated into each battery, which is bidirectionally controlled through a local controller and a primary droop control that balances the required power at the loads. It produces a voltage deviation on the DC bus. To compensate for this deviation, a distributed secondary control strategy based on consensus is proposed to restore the voltage while managing the power sharing according to the capacities of each battery. It allows for the improvement of its life cycle, which is shown in the state of charge (SOC) index, thus extending its life cycle. The controllers are evaluated for solar re-source changes, load changes, and different storage capacities.

The transition of the global financial markets? connectedness during the COVID-19 pandemic

【Abstract】This study contributes to the literature on financial research under the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fresh evidence emerges from using two novel approaches, namely network analysis and wavelet coherence, to examine the connectedness and comovement of financial markets consisting of stock, commodity, gold, real estate investment trust, US exchange, oil, and Cryp-tocurrency before and during the COVID-19 onset. Moreover, unlike the previous studies, we seek to fill a gap in the literature regarding the ex-post detection of COVID-19 crises and propose the Markov-switching autoregressive model to detect structural breaks in financial market returns. The first result shows that most financial markets entered the downtrend after January 30, 2020, coinciding with the date the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 pandemic as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Thus, it is reasonable to use this date as the break date due to COVID-19. The empirical result from network analysis indicates a similar connectedness, or the network structure, in other words, among global financial markets in both the pre-and during COVID-19 pandemic periods. Moreover, we find evidence of market differ-ences as the MSCI stock market plays a central role while Cryptocurrency presents a weak role in the global financial markets. The findings from the wavelet coherence analysis are quite mixed and illustrate that the comovement of the financial markets varies over time across different frequencies. We also find the main and most significant period of coherence and comovement among financial markets to be between December 2019 and August 2020 at the low-frequency scale (>32 days) (middle and long terms). Among all market pairs, the oil and commodity market pair has the strongest comovement in both pre-and during the COVID-19 pandemic phases at all investment horizons.

Development of a Simulator Capable of Generating Age-Specific Pulse Pressure Waveforms for Medical Palpation Training

【Abstract】With the emergence of the metaverse and other human-computer interaction technologies, promising applications such as medical palpation training are growing for training and education purposes. Thus, the overarching goal of this study is to develop a portable and simple pulse pressure simulator that can reproduce age-specific pulse pressure waveforms for medical palpation training. For training applications, the simulator is required to produce accurate radial pulse waveforms consistently and repeatedly. To this end, exploiting the cam-based pneumatic pulse generation mechanism, this study intends to develop a cylindrical (or 3D) cam whose continually varying surface contains a wide range of age-related pulse pressure profiles. To evaluate the performance of the simulator, the reproduced pulse waveforms were compared with approximate radial pulse pressure waveforms based on in vivo data in terms of the augmentation index (AI) and L-2 error. The results show that the errors were less than 10% for all ages, indicating that the proposed pulse simulator can reproduce the age-specific pulse waveforms equivalent to human radial pulse waveforms. The findings in this study suggest that the pulse simulator would be an excellent system for RAPP palpation training as it can reproduce a desired pulse accurately and consistently.

【Abstract】To analyze the research impact of the researcher, different bibliographic databases like Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, etc. are accessed for evaluating the trend of publications and citations from time to time. However, the choice of the bibliographic database is always debatable. Hence, to provide an optimal solution for a given problem, this study proposes a distributed ledger-based consensus mechanism for the presentation of authors' informetrics. The proposed consensus mechanism named "proof of bibliometric indicators" is a consent-based system that is introduced as a base to form trustworthiness among authors and various stakeholders, thus exhibiting a development of the decentralized application. In the end, the proposed system is also implemented with the capabilities of an Ethereum-based decentralized application designed by Truffle and Ganache.
