【Abstract】The emerging cell-free network architecture can handle the intensified inter-cell interference in cellular networks via dynamic user-centric cooperation among multiple access points (APs), and thus is widely regarded as the fundamental architecture for 6G. However, this vision is hard to achieve in a short period due to the prohibitive expense of large-scale AP deployment and management. In this paper, we revisit the role of cell-free network architecture by comparing it with cellular architecture from both macroscopic and microcosmic perspectives. With their pros and cons in mind, we propose an interdependent cellular and cell-free network (ICCN) architecture that integrates the advantages of both. Three interdependent relationships between high-layer cellular network and low-layer cell-free network are introduced, with corresponding key enabling technologies being deeply investigated. Finally, some open issues and future research directions are also summarized and discussed.

【Abstract】As the deployment of 5G technology matures, the anticipation for 6G is growing, which promises to deliver faster and more reliable wireless connections via cutting-edge radio technologies. A pivot to these radio technologies is the effective management of large-scale antenna arrays, which aims to construct valid spatial streams to maximize system throughput. Traditional management methods predominantly rely on user feedback to adapt to dynamic wireless channels. However, a more promising approach lies in the prediction of spatial channel state information (spatial-CSI), which is a channel characterization that consists of all robust line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx), with three-dimensional (3D) trajectory, attenuation, phase shift, delay, and polarization of each path. Recent advances in hardware and neural networks make it possible to predict such spatial-CSI using precise environmental information, and further explores the possibility of holographic communication, which implies complete control over every aspect of the radio waves. This paper presents a preliminary exploration of using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to accurately model the environment particularly for radio simulations and identify valid paths within it for real-time spatial-CSI prediction. Our validation project demonstrates promising results, highlighting the potential of this approach in driving forward the evolution of 6G wireless communication technologies.

【Abstract】Considered to be the next-generation (NextG) Internet, the Metaverse faces various security risks inherited from its predecessor and new specialized threats. It is even more challenging to mitigate these issues in a large-scale setting with numerous wearable devices such as augmented, virtual reality (AR/VR) headsets. In this article, we aim to analyze the security aspect of the Metaverse thoroughly, focusing on blockchain and machine learning (ML) solutions. Firstly, we present a 4-layer architecture of the Metaverse and discuss potential solutions for Metaverse security based on blockchain and ML. Next, we develop a decentralized collaborative intrusion detection system (CIDS) based on blockchain and federated learning (FL) that allows such the Metaverse users to collaboratively protect this digital world. This helps solving the scalability and single-point-of-failure (SPoF) issues of traditional security approaches. Finally, we outline some key challenges and discuss future research directions for Metaverse security.

【Abstract】As a shared and distributed database, blockchain empowers distributed edge computing (EC) networks with decentralization, integrity, and auditability of trust management. However, a bottleneck issue of blockchain-enabled decentralized trust management (B-DTM) lies in off-chain trust verification, since blockchain is a guarantee of on-chain trustworthiness rather than the reliability of off-chain trust. To orchestrate the off-chain and on-chain trust, we develop a novel B-DTM framework for EC networks that features off-chain trust verification and on-chain trust based consensus mechanisms. In the off-chain environment of EC, each edge node gains its verifiable trust according to Quality of Task Execution (QoTE). Furthermore, we justify that verified off-chain trust can be used as stake for the on-chain consensus. In particular, we design a novel consensus mechanism called Proof-of-Trusted-Work (PoTW), wherein the difficulty adjustable mining work and chain structure of trust data are introduced to promote the on-chain trust security and the trust based mining difficulty adjustment is employed to improve the on-chain trust update efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency and security performances of the proposed B-DTM against various on-chain and off-chain malicious attacks.

【Abstract】Blockchain-based peer-to-peer ET (P2P-ET) is expected to be a key element of the next-generation power system due to its decentralized nature, immutable data structure and smart contract capability that allows energy contracts to be made on the blockchain. However, blockchain suffers from performance, scalability and privacy challenges. To address these challenges, we propose MuLCOff, a multi-layer consensus and off-chain computation-based P2P-ET system. MuLCOff's architecture consists of three network layers, where each layer consists of multiple blockchain network shards that can operate as an independent permissioned blockchain network. The network shards can participate in multiple layers of consensus simultaneously. Unlike previous systems, MuLCOff supports the concurrent processing of transactions across different consensus layers. Each network shard also has an associated off-chain infrastructure, which allows performing heavy computations and private energy negotiation outside the blockchain. Experimental results indicate that the proposed multi-layer consensus provides 87% better throughput compared to state of the art consensus algorithms. Moreover, MuLCOff's off-chain-based ET scheme reduces the latency by 75 to 124 times and the computation cost by a factor of 80 to 94.6 respectively compared to its on-chain counterpart.

【Abstract】This paper examines the effect of investor attention on the cross-section of cryptocurrency returns and trading activities. We find that cryptocurrencies associated with higher abnormal Google search volume subsequently exhibit higher returns, higher volatility, and higher trading volume. The results are robust to alternative sample periods and alternative search keywords, providing concrete support to the attention-induced price pressure hypothesis and consistent with prior studies on the equity market. The effect is more pronounced among larger cryptocurrencies. Only a partial reversal after the initial return increase is observed, implying that investor attention permanently impacts cryptocurrency prices.

【Abstract】With the intensification of global climate change and resource depletion, the use of low-carbon energy and the exploration of circular economy model become more and more important. As an efficient way to use energy, thermal energy cycle has wide application potential in manufacturing industry. This study aims to build a sustainable manufacturing production synergy and circular economy model under low-carbon energy based on thermal energy recycling and blockchain technology, in order to improve the resource utilization efficiency of manufacturing industry, reduce carbon emissions, and achieve double benefits of economy and environment. Through literature analysis and case studies, key elements of thermal energy recycling and blockchain technology are integrated to design and simulate a new collaborative manufacturing system. The system uses thermal energy recycling technology to convert waste heat recovery into reusable energy, and combines blockchain technology to achieve real-time monitoring of energy flows and production processes to improve transparency and efficiency. The model simulation results show that after the introduction of heat recovery and blockchain management, the energy utilization efficiency in the manufacturing process is greatly improved, and the overall carbon emissions are significantly reduced. The transparent data sharing mechanism helps all participants optimize production decisions and improve the flexibility and response speed of collaborative production.

【Abstract】At present, both emerging and developed economies have faced the challenge of higher healthcare waste generation. Developed countries are using these technologies to manage healthcare waste and cope with the challenge. Emerging economies are still struggling to understand and implement digital technologies in healthcare waste management, posing a danger to partners handling toxic and hazardous waste. The proper handling of healthcare waste is essential for social and environmental sustainability. Digital technologies that drive digital transformation in the healthcare sector impact the traditional way of managing healthcare waste. Digital technologies include artificial intelligence, blockchain, the Internet of Things, sensors, data analytics and radio frequency identification. These technologies can potentially address vehicle route planning and scheduling problems, resource optimisation, real-time tracking and the visibility of healthcare waste management. Apart from economic and environmental concerns, the operational workforce also takes care of societal well-being and implements waste management strategies and policies. Past research has focused on integrating blockchain technology to enhance traceability and transparency in waste collection and disposal activities. However, the application and impact of these technologies for managing different operations of healthcare management with sustainability is a gap bridged by the present study. This study adopts a systematic literature review to identify research trends, applications and implications of digital transformation. It proposes a digital technology-driven framework for healthcare waste management for further research.

【Abstract】The stability of Web 3.0 depends on the existence of a robust decentralized storage infrastructure. One challenge associated with decentralized storage is access control in the context of data outsourcing. Many solutions to this problem have been proposed, but there still exist limitations. For instance, the implementation of an access control algorithm may consume a considerable amount of computing resources, necessitate reliance on a centralized storage service provider, and fail to effectively arbitrate against malicious behaviors. To address the these problems, we innovatively propose a Publicly Verifiable Data Access Control (PVDAC) algorithm without bilinear pairing to reduce the computational overhead and provide an efficient arbitration method. We extend the blockchain with a layer two network to reduce the token consumption associated with on-chain operations. We analyzed the security of the scheme, proved that it meets the CCA security of the ciphertext, and conducted comprehensive experiments to evaluate its performance. The results show that the proposed PVDAC scheme achieves low computational consumption by costing only 1% to 10% of the token consumption for interaction with the main chain, and meanwhile, supports public verification.

【Abstract】This study explores the impact of blockchain adoption on the sustainability of accounting education in Saudi Arabia, highlighting its potential to revolutionize educational practices in a digitally evolving landscape. Using a quantitative research methodology, the study involved accounting educators to gather their insights and expectations regarding incorporating blockchain into accounting education. To analyze the collected data, this research employed SEM-PLS methodology, which allows for the evaluation of complex relationships between observed variables and latent constructs. The SEM-PLS approach facilitates examining the hypothesized model, testing both the direct and indirect effects of blockchain adoption on the sustainability of educational practices. The results substantiate the hypothesis that the adoption of blockchain positively influences the sustainability of accounting education by promoting innovation, reducing resource consumption, and improving educational quality. This research not only elucidates the transformative role of blockchain in fostering a sustainable educational environment but also offers valuable guidance for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in the field. By aligning educational practices with cutting-edge technological advancements, this research adds to the wider discourse on sustainable development in education and offers practical recommendations for the advancement of accounting education in Saudi Arabia.

【Abstract】The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a complex network comprising interconnected devices that transmit their data via the Internet. Due to their open environment, limited computation power, and absence of builtin security, IoT environments are susceptible to various cyberattacks. Denial of service (DDoS) attacks are among the most destructive types of threats. The Multi-vector DDoS attack is a contemporary and formidable form of DDoS wherein the attacker employs a collection of compromised IoT devices as zombies to initiate numerous DDoS attacks against a target server. A Blockchain-based Operational Threat Intelligence framework, OTI-IoT, is proposed in this article to counter multi-vector DDoS attacks in IoT networks. A "Prevent-then- Detect" methodology was utilized to deploy the OTI-IoT framework in two distinct stages. During Phase 1, the consortium Blockchain network validators employ the IPS module, composed of a smart contract for attack prevention and access control, and Proof of Voting consensus, to thwart attacks. Validators are outfitted with deep learning-based IDS instances to detect multi-vector DDoS attacks during Phase 2. Alert messages are generated by the IDS module's alert generation and propagation smart contract in response to identifying malicious IoT sources. The feedback loop from the IDS module to the IPS module prevents incoming traffic from malicious sources. The proposed OTI framework capabilities are realized as an outcome of combining and storing the outcomes of the IDS and IPS modules on the consortium Blockchain. Each validator maintains a shared ledger containing information regarding threat sources to ensure robust security, transparency, and integrity. The operational execution of OTI-IoT occurs on an individual Ethereum Blockchain. The empirical findings indicate that our proposed framework is most suitable for real-time applications due to its ability to lower attack detection time, decreased block validation time, and higher attack prevention rate.

【Abstract】Most epidemiological surveys focus on adult gambling behaviors related to traditional gambling forms, while studies on novel forms often focus on loot boxes and cryptocurrency trading individually. This study examines the co-ocurrence of emergent gambling and gambling-like practices, analyzing the demographic and psychological characteristics of involved gamblers. A cross-sectional study surveyed 1429 Spanish individuals aged 18-65, using a web-based questionnaire. The survey assessed participation in 19 gambling (e.g., lotteries, sports betting) and gambling-like activities (e.g., trading of cryptocurrencies and other assets, buying loot-boxes), along with sociodemographic and substance use. Problem gambling (PGSI), Impulsivity (UPPS-P), and cognitive distortions (Labrador's cognitive distortions scale) were also assessed. Participants who gambled over the past year (n = 921) were classified into four groups: traditional gambling (TG) only (64.5%, n = 594), TG with trading activities (27.5%, n = 253), TG with gambling withing video games or streaming platforms (2.5%, n = 23), and TG with both trading and video gambling (5.5%, n = 51). Most gamblers engaged exclusively in traditional formats, but 35.5% also participated in novel gambling forms. Those involved in both trading and video gambling were generally younger, male, with higher levels of impulsivity and gambling-related cognitive distortions compared to TG-only gamblers (p < 0.001). This group also exhibited higher rates of problem gambling and substance use (p < 0.001). This study emphasize the importance of including emerging gambling activities, which are particularly prevalent among high-risk gamblers, in epidemiological surveys. Identifying new gambling patterns and associated risk factors could help optimize public policies and develop more effective regulatory and prevention strategies.

【Abstract】Blockchain technology plays a significant role in new technology infrastructure and has a significant influence on artificial intelligence, big data, and 5 G, and its application has been extended to the Internet of Things, digital asset transactions, digital finance, and so on. In financial systems, it could improve the efficiency of data processing, reduce errors, and detect fraud. However, blockchain adoption could increase the stock price and induce manipulation opportunisms. Managers could also use this advantage to mask their performance and increase corporate default risk. Using the data of Chinese listed companies from 2001 to 2021, we investigate whether blockchain technology adoption could increase or decrease corporate default risk. Using the expected default risk model to estimate the risk, the results show that the default risk increases once the firm adopts blockchain technology, which indicates managerial opportunism behavior. The effect works in firms with CEO duality and higher power consolidation. And similar results are also shown in the dual-duty companies. The results are also robust in instrumental variable tests, difference-in-difference tests (DIDs), firm-fixed effect, placebo tests, and other robustness tests.

【Abstract】This study uses game-theory to construct a dual-channel green supply chain consisting of a manufacturer, a blockchain-enabled platform, and a non-blockchain-enabled offline retailer, with the aim of comparing two government subsidy strategies: greenness investment cost subsidy and production subsidy, and exploring the impact of blockchain adoption. First, firms without government subsidy should adopt blockchain only when privacy costs are low. Both subsidy strategies can always motivate the manufacturer to increase greenness investment levels and achieve a triple-win situation. Second, when the government controls the greenness investment level, the demand, profits, and subsidy amount under cost subsidy are always lower than those under production subsidy. Third, when the government controls the subsidy amount, the greenness investment level under cost subsidy is always higher than that under production subsidy. The offline demand and retailer's profit are higher under production subsidy, while the online demand and platform's profit are higher under cost subsidy. The manufacturer's profit is higher under cost subsidy only when the subsidy level is low. Additionally, regardless of governmental goals, the platform's profit is always higher than the retailer's profit, indicating that downstream firms under government subsidy should always adopt blockchain.

【Abstract】PurposeAs a potentially disruptive technology, blockchain technology ensures that all the data cannot be merely tampered with once they are recorded on-chain. However, the fake source information may be input into the blockchain, which is mistaken for truthful data and results in a trust divide between the on-chain and the actual world. One missing perspective from previous studies is information manipulation at the source still exists under the blockchain mode. The authors' goal was to analyze how blockchain technology affects the information deception of the agricultural product supply chain (APSC) under this premise. Also, the authors further analyzed some factors that influence the effectiveness of blockchain technology.Design/methodology/approachThe authors build an APSC game model consisting of a farmer and an agricultural product broker, which employs the principal-agent game model to explore the conditions for achieving the mutual trust equilibrium between the two parts. Then, through numerical simulation, the authors further analyze how the quality of on-chain information and the numbers of on-chain firms affect blockchain's effect on deception in APSC and examine the circumstances in which blockchain technology is more suitable.FindingsThe authors demonstrate that only by meeting the threshold of high-quality on-chain information and having a sufficient number of on-chain firms, can the blockchain-based supply chain initiate a better information ecosystem, which helps eradicate deception in the APSC.Originality/valueThis paper provides valuable insights for participants in supply chains as well as is probably generalizable to other industrial products that require similar services in the early stage of blockchain.

【Abstract】Integrating blockchain technology with Internet of Things (IoT) devices has great potential for a variety of applications, however, guaranteeing energy efficiency remains a significant challenge. This study aims to explore the development of energy-efficient strategies for the seamless integration of blockchain and IoT devices. This research focuses on lowering computational overhead and energy-intensive consensus procedures in order to enable a sustainable and optimal union of two potential technologies. This study introduces a new energy-efficient technique for ensuring the security of IoT devices. This newly presented approach combines blockchain with the code division multiple access (CDMA) algorithm to securely transfer IoT messages while consuming less energy. At the transmission end, data from many IoT devices are multiplexed using orthogonal codes that are distinct for each IoT device. The multiplexed data is then sent and fed into a blockchain network, which improves data security and integrity. The blockchain transfers the data to the CDMA receiver after completing tasks including validation, block generation, and transaction completion. For verification, the entire blockchain and CDMA-based IoT network is constructed. Experimental results indicate a significant reduction of up to 90% in energy consumption and up to 80% reduction in time latency.

【Abstract】This study unveils the unique properties of crypto assets and investigates the dynamic connectedness between six prominent stablecoins and Bitcoin in comparison with Bitcoin/stablecoin pairs involving portfolio management. Empirically, using the DCC-GJR-GARCH and partial wavelet coherence approaches, we show that Bitcoin provides greater diversification potential benefits compared to stablecoins during the COVID-19 crisis. The evidence suggests that Bitcoin, as the dominant cryptoasset, can serve as a suitable asset for portfolio diversification against stablecoins. Besides, we evaluate potential hedging benefits of cryptocurrencies for market participants and find that stablecoins are poor hedging products in most of the cases considered. The optimal portfolio for the hedging strategy involving a mix of Bitcoin and stablecoins reveals that the weights assigned to stablecoins are lower than those for Bitcoin. In particular, our results provide timely implications for market participants whose crypto portfolios include stablecoins, especially after Terra's collapse. Bitcoin offers more portfolio diversification benefits than stablecoins during the COVID-19 pandemic.Time-varying and asymmetric co-movements between Bitcoin and major stablecoins.DCC-GJR-GARCH approach is used to compute portfolio optimization and hedging ratios.

【Abstract】The metaverse is a virtual environment that combines the real and digital worlds through technological and social structures. It heralds a novel paradigm in internet applications and societal engagement by weaving together diverse cutting-edge technologies to facilitate a virtual representation of the tangible world. Within the metaverse, the facets of economy, culture, and other dimensions are fully documentable, trackable, and quantifiable, largely owing to the capabilities of blockchain technology. Nonetheless, the transactional volume within the metaverse is typically substantial, posing challenges for a singular blockchain platform in terms of efficiency and support capacity. Consequently, a multi-blockchain infrastructure becomes essential to underpin the economic fabric of the metaverse. Enabling the collaborative operation of multiple blockchain platforms, specifically achieving the seamless transfer of value across different blockchain ecosystems, has emerged as a critical challenge. To address this challenge, this paper introduces a cross-chain protocol predicated on a multi-role notary system designed to facilitate inter-blockchain value transfers. The protocol specifies the functions of different entities within the notary framework, allocating specific duties to notaries, committees, and a leader. It also promotes mutual oversight among notaries to sustain a dynamic and equitable group structure. Furthermore, an incentive mechanism is proposed to motivate committee members toward prompt and judicious decision-making regarding votes. Based on experiments conducted on the Ethereum platform, our proposed solution exhibits a 75% reduction in transaction time compared to Ethereum's transaction confirmation time. This paper introduces a cross-chain protocol based on a multi-role notary system, aiming to facilitate value transfer between blockchains and construct the economic framework of the metaverse using a multi-chain system. It also provides a security analysis and performance analysis of the scheme to illustrate its advantages. image

【Abstract】This review article engages critically with Christian von Bar's proposed definition of things as objects of property rights and their proposed place as one category in a tripartite taxonomy of the objects of private law; both expounded as part of a broader aim of bringing together the property laws of the Member States of the European Union and the UK as part of a single picture. The article first contextualises these proposals against the background of the UNIDROIT Principles on Digital Assets and the ongoing debates in England and Wales as to the property status of cryptoassets such as bitcoin; then offers a primer for both common law and civilian law readers on the structure, content and objectives of the book. After setting out the proposed taxonomy and the core theses upon which it is premised, the article then evaluates von Bar's proposals and illustrates how they can inform and guide the debates as international and domestic laws grapple with the challenges posed by new and novel objects of economic value. The book under review is an abridged version of the first two parts of Gemeineurop & auml;isches Sachenrecht, originally published in German by CH Beck in 2015, which were translated into English by Jason Grant Allen and reworked into a standalone text published by OUP in 2023.

【Abstract】In this paper, we aim to modify multivariate copula-based conditional quantiles for a targeted random variable, given multiple random variables attaining their respective quantiles. Specifically, we propose two modifications through the Cornish-Fisher expansion, one of which involves its analytic higher-order unconditional moments. The second one accounts for its higher-order conditional moments estimated using a ratio estimation method. By considering multivariate elliptical and Archimedean copulas with Johnson's SU margins, our simulation study shows that this method provides more accurate conditional moment estimators compared to the naive method. They result in expanded conditional quantile estimators, whose efficiency is relatively better than their unexpanded versions, particularly at lower and higher quantile levels under a stronger (tail) dependence assumption. A much higher efficiency is gained when the first modification is performed. These findings are validated using an empirical study based on cryptocurrency return data and a comparative analysis against the existing estimation approaches.
